Management Strategy 3 - Sustainable Fisheries

Picture
For the Great Barrier Reef much of its value comes from commercial fisheries and recreational fishing. A lot of economic gain comes from this however it does pose a threat to the health of the reefs ecosystem. To manage this issue the Fisheries Issues Group has introduced a number of objectives that will be followed so that the values of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park will not be compromised. The primary aim is to maintain ecologically sustainable fisheries.  In doing so the fisheries must:

·       Enable the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to assess the ecological sustainability of fishing in GBR.

·         Protect rare, threatened and endangered species and communities together with their critical habitats.

·         Ensure they keep with social & cultural needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

·         Have an effective information base on ecological and socio-economic impacts of fishing in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park so sound decisions on resource sustainability can be made
